Full product description

RIX Tactical RNV-31 Night Vision Goggle Overview

The RIX Tactical RNV-31 is a compact dual-tube night vision goggle built around standard 18 mm image intensifier tubes. At approximately 500 g, or about 17.6 oz, it gives hunters, ranch operators, sport shooters, and professional users true binocular night vision in a lightweight helmet-mounted platform.

The biggest advantage over a single-tube monocular is natural depth perception. With both eyes under night vision, it is easier to move through brush, navigate uneven ground, maintain peripheral awareness, and stay behind the device for longer periods without the same level of eye fatigue.

The RNV-31 runs on a single AA battery for at least 20 hours of operation. For longer sessions, the optional dual-18650 battery pack extends runtime to at least 50 hours.

Thermal Fusion Ready

The RNV-31 includes the Thermal Fusion Pendant Adapter in the box. This adapter mounts to the bottom of the objective lens and accepts a compatible thermal clip-on, allowing thermal heat signatures to be overlaid onto the native night vision view.

For users who want a night vision setup that can grow over time, this is a major advantage. You can start with binocular night vision, then add compatible thermal capability later without replacing the entire system.

Key Features

  • Dual-tube binocular design: Improves depth perception, peripheral awareness, and comfort during extended use.
  • Standard 18 mm tube format: Built around common image intensifier tube architecture.
  • Multiple tube configurations: Available in white or green phosphor with different FOM ranges.
  • 1× magnification: Natural viewing for movement, navigation, and helmet-mounted use.
  • 25 mm F/1.2 objective lenses: Designed for a bright, usable night vision image.
  • 40° field of view: Standard night vision field of view for situational awareness.
  • Adjustable IPD: Interpupillary distance adjusts from 53 mm to 75 mm to fit different users.
  • Manual gain control: Front-mounted potentiometer knob lets you adjust brightness to match the scene.
  • Auto standby: Enters standby after 3 minutes of inactivity to help preserve battery life.
  • Auto power-off: Powers off when the unit is flipped upward or sideways.
  • Built-in 850 nm IR illuminator: Supports use in zero-ambient-light conditions.
  • Bright Source Protection: Helps protect tubes from sudden bright light exposure.
  • In-FOV LED indicators: Shows IR illuminator status, flip-up off, side flip-up off, BSP activation, and low battery status.
  • G24 dovetail interface: Direct compatibility with standard helmet mount systems.
  • Single AA battery operation: At least 20 hours of runtime from one AA battery.
  • Optional dual-18650 battery pack: Extends runtime to at least 50 hours.
  • Thermal Fusion Pendant Adapter included: Allows compatible clip-on thermal integration.
  • Wide operating temperature range: Rated from -40°F to +122°F.
  • Ingress protection rated to 10 meters: Built for rain, splashes, and harsh field conditions.

Tube Configurations Explained

The RNV-31 is available in multiple tube grades and phosphor options. This is the most important choice because the tube configuration determines image quality, low-light performance, and price.

What FOM Means

FOM, or Figure of Merit, is a common measurement used to compare image intensifier tube performance. Higher FOM generally means a cleaner, sharper image with less noise, especially in very low light.

  • 1400-1600 FOM: Good Gen 2+ performance for most recreational, hunting, ranch, and property-security use cases.
  • 1800-2000 FOM: Better low-light clarity and image quality for users who want stronger performance from the housing.

White Phosphor vs. Green Phosphor

Green phosphor is the classic night vision look. It is proven, familiar, and usually the more cost-effective option.

White phosphor displays the image in black, white, and gray tones. Many users find it easier on the eyes during extended use, and it can make fine details easier to interpret.

Neither is universally better. Choose white phosphor for comfort and detail during longer sessions. Choose green phosphor if you want a traditional image and better price control.

Common Use Cases

  • Hog and predator hunting where binocular depth perception helps with movement through brush and uneven terrain.
  • Helmet-mounted night vision through the integrated G24 interface.
  • Property and ranch security after dark.
  • Search and rescue applications in low-light conditions.
  • Land navigation and driving in unlit terrain.
  • Range training and night-fire qualification.
  • Pairing with a compatible thermal clip-on through the included Thermal Fusion Pendant Adapter.

Who the RNV-31 Is Best For

  • Hunters who want true dual-tube night vision for movement, navigation, and field awareness.
  • Ranchers and landowners monitoring property after dark.
  • Sport shooters and training users who need helmet-mounted night vision.
  • Users who want binocular night vision with thermal fusion upgrade potential.
  • Buyers who want a lightweight goggle with common mounting compatibility.

Who Should Consider Something Else

The RNV-31 may be more than you need if you only use night vision a few times per year and a single monocular already handles your use case. Dual-tube night vision is more comfortable and capable, but it also costs more.

If you need a specific milspec tube system for contract, agency, or department requirements, confirm that the exact configuration meets those requirements before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does FOM mean and which should I choose?

FOM, or Figure of Merit, is a common measurement for tube performance. Higher FOM generally means a cleaner image with less noise in low light. Choose 1400-1600 FOM for most hunting, ranch, and recreational use. Choose 1800-2000 FOM if you want stronger low-light image quality.

Should I choose white phosphor or green phosphor?

White phosphor is often easier on the eyes during longer use and can help with perceived contrast. Green phosphor is the classic night vision image and is usually more cost-effective. Neither is universally better.

How long does the RNV-31 run on a single AA battery?

The RNV-31 runs for at least 20 hours on one AA battery. The optional dual-18650 battery pack extends operating time to at least 50 hours.
