Hog hunting rewards a scanner more than almost any other night hunting, and asks less of it. Hogs are large, they run hot, they move in groups, and they are noisy about all of it. A handheld lets you find a sounder and read which way it is drifting well before you commit to an approach.

Hogs Are the Easiest Common Target to Find With Thermal
A sounder of hogs is the largest, hottest, most obvious signature you will encounter on a normal night. Several animals moving together throw far more heat than one, they radiate through brush that would hide a smaller animal, and they rarely hold still long enough to be mistaken for anything else.
Finding them is not the hard part of hog hunting. Getting into position without pushing them out of the county is. Hogs move fast when they decide to leave, they take the whole group with them, and they do not come back that night. What you need from a scanner is speed and mobility, not maximum detail at maximum distance.
A Wide Field of View Matters More Than Reach for Hogs
Hogs live in cover: river bottoms, creek drainages, thick brush, standing crops, the edges where feed meets bedding. Working that ground means sweeping a lot of close terrain quickly, and a wide view covers it in fewer passes.
A narrow, magnified view does the opposite. It shows you a small slice at a time, which slows every sweep and makes it easier to pass over a group bedded fifty yards off. Most units here use a short objective lens for exactly that reason. The wider look is the right trade when the animals are close and the ground is broken.
A 384 Sensor Is Genuinely Enough for Hog Hunting

Look at a higher-resolution scanner if you also hunt predators. Coyotes are small, cautious, and hold at distance, and they demand detail that hogs never will. A scanner bought for coyotes handles hogs easily; the reverse is not reliably true.
Consider a binocular if your hog hunting is mostly stationary. Stand work over a feeder or a field means long stretches of glassing, and that is easier on two eyes than on one.
