New DNT HYDRA-Mini HS210M: One Thermal Optic, Four Ways to Use It

Quick answer: The new DNT HYDRA-Mini HS210M is a compact 4-in-1 thermal optic that can be used as a standalone riflescope, handheld scanner, helmet-mounted thermal or front-mounted clip-on. It combines a wide 1× view, 256 × 192 thermal sensor, 10mm lens and an 11.3-ounce body at an announced price of $999.

The DNT HYDRA-Mini HS210M has officially arrived, giving hunters and property owners a different kind of option in the affordable thermal market. Instead of building the optic around maximum magnification or long-range identification, DNT designed the HS210M around portability, field of view and configuration flexibility.

Thermal Bros verdict: This is a close-range, wide-view thermal specialist for buyers who want one device to fill several roles. It is not intended to replace a higher-resolution thermal riflescope for detailed identification at longer distances.

What Is the DNT HYDRA-Mini HS210M?

The HS210M is the most compact member of the DNT HYDRA family. Its modular design allows the same thermal core to move between four configurations:

  • Standalone thermal riflescope
  • Handheld thermal monocular
  • Helmet-mounted thermal
  • Front-mounted thermal clip-on

That flexibility makes the HS210M especially interesting for hunters who scan by hand, use thermal from a helmet or want to add thermal capability ahead of a low-power daytime optic.

Four Ways to Use the HS210M

1. Standalone Thermal Riflescope

Install the HS210M on a rifle and use its onboard reticles and one-shot zeroing as a compact thermal riflescope. Its wide field of view is useful for close-range hog and predator control, especially in wooded areas, around feeders or anywhere animals may move quickly through the scene.

2. Handheld Thermal Scanner

Detach the unit and use it as a handheld thermal monocular for locating animals, checking property or scanning before transitioning to a weapon-mounted optic. At approximately 11.3 ounces, the HS210M is light enough to carry without adding significant bulk to a hunting setup.

3. Helmet-Mounted Thermal

The compact body and nominal 1× view make the HS210M compatible with helmet-mounted observation. A complete helmet configuration requires a compatible helmet, shroud, helmet mount and dovetail bridge. Those helmet components should not be assumed to be included with the optic.

4. Front-Mounted Thermal Clip-On

Mount the HS210M ahead of a compatible daytime optic to add thermal capability while continuing to use the day optic's reticle. DNT recommends pairing the HS210M with optics that begin around 1× to 2× magnification.

The included QDF193 quick-detach flip-to-side mount positions the optic at a 1.93-inch centerline. The day optic and thermal should be properly aligned for the best viewing experience. Alternative DNT mounting heights are available for rifles that do not use a 1.93-inch optic height.

Wide 1× Thermal View

The HS210M combines a 256 × 192, 12µm thermal detector with a 10mm objective lens. This produces a published field of view of approximately 30.7 × 23 yards at 100 yards.

That wide view is one of the optic's biggest advantages. It allows the user to see more ground at once, track movement more easily and maintain better awareness when scanning or moving with a helmet-mounted thermal.

The tradeoff is distance detail. A 10mm lens places fewer sensor pixels on a distant animal than a 19mm, 25mm or longer lens. The HS210M is therefore best judged as a close-range observation and engagement tool—not a long-range identification optic.

Image Super Resolution and ≤18mK Sensitivity

The HS210M has a published NETD rating of ≤18mK, which helps the detector distinguish smaller temperature differences when conditions provide limited thermal contrast.

DNT also includes always-on Image Super Resolution processing. ISR can improve the presentation of edges and details, particularly when digital magnification is used. It does not change the native 256 × 192 detector into a 384- or 640-resolution sensor, and buyers should still evaluate the HS210M as a 256-class thermal.

Recording, Display and Battery Life

A 1024 × 768 Micro-OLED display presents the thermal image, reticle and menus. Users can select from four thermal palettes, eight reticle styles and five reticle colors. Picture-in-Picture provides a 2× enlarged window while retaining the wider scene.

The HS210M records video and audio to 32GB of internal storage. Recoil Activated Video can automatically capture footage during firearm-mounted use, while Wi-Fi connectivity works with the DNT Optics app for live viewing and recording playback.

Power comes from replaceable rechargeable 18650 batteries. DNT publishes up to seven hours of runtime per battery and up to 14 hours between the two supplied batteries. Actual runtime will depend on temperature, battery condition, display settings, Wi-Fi and recording use.

Who Is the HS210M Best For?

  • Close-range hog and predator hunting
  • Property owners and pest-control applications
  • Handheld scanning in wooded or mixed terrain
  • Helmet-mounted thermal observation
  • Low-magnification thermal clip-on setups
  • Buyers who want one compact thermal to cover several roles

Who Should Consider Something Else?

The HS210M is not our first recommendation for long-range identification, frequent high-magnification shooting or wide-open terrain where image detail at distance is the priority. It also does not include an integrated laser rangefinder or ballistic calculator.
