01 / EXPLORE THE RULES

Start with your state.

Choose coyotes, wild hogs, raccoons or other nongame wildlife first. We separate nighttime hunting, hunting with thermal, and scouting so the map answers your exact question.

Read this first: A nighttime season does not automatically allow thermal. YES has requirements; NO means a documented prohibition; NEEDS VERIFICATION means the rule is not established. “Nongame” is not one nationwide animal category.
Are thermal scopes legal for hunting at night in my state?

It depends on the animal, activity, equipment and property. A state might allow raccoon hunting at night but prohibit thermal with a weapon. Select your situation to see a sourced YES, NO or NEEDS VERIFICATION—not an unsupported statewide promise.

01 / ANIMALWhat are you hunting?
02 / ACTIVITY
03 / LAND

Raccoon is its own category. States commonly regulate raccoons as furbearers. “Other nongame wildlife” can include opossums, skunks, nutria or other species depending on state law; a blanket YES for unnamed animals would be misleading. See each state guide for exact species, seasons and method restrictions.

YES means an official-source-backed route exists for the described type of hunt. It does not mean legal tonight, in every county, or without licenses.

YES means we found a documented pathway for the selected species or named nongame category on qualifying private land, with requirements. NO means a cited prohibition for that scenario. NEEDS VERIFICATION means the official sources did not support a clear conclusion—not that the activity is necessarily illegal. Public-land answers remain site-specific unless an outright prohibition is confirmed.

03 / UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCES

Why the same optic gets different answers.

01

First, identify the species.

Coyotes and feral hogs are governed by different rules. A hog exception never automatically applies to coyotes, and many states do not have ordinary recreational hog seasons.

02

Night hunting is not thermal permission.

A state can permit hunting after dark but restrict thermal while taking wildlife. Equipment seasons, permits and deer-season blackout dates are separate checks.

03

Scouting is a different activity.

Locating an animal before a hunt can itself be restricted. Oregon, for instance, forbids hunting-purpose thermal scouting. State rules can also distinguish passive thermal from IR illumination.

How Thermal Bros researches this: We check species, activity, property, device and season as separate questions. We reserve YES for a supported legal pathway and NO for an explicit restriction; when a rule does not classify thermal scouting, we say NEEDS VERIFICATION rather than inventing an answer. This guide was updated November 2, 2026. Review dates and state sources appear in every guide; confirm amendments and emergency orders before relying on an answer.
